What are marks?

Marks are the currency used to upgrade permanent equipment to higher star levels in the Armory. The Armory displays the balance beside a class name and shows a marks price for the next star upgrade. Check that class-specific balance when you change heroes; do not plan an upgrade using another class's displayed total.

Marks are different from the gold collected during a run and the talent experience that unlocks permanent talent points. They are also unrelated to the Hunter's Mark ability, which marks an enemy in combat.

How to spend marks

  1. Select the class whose equipment you want to improve, then open the Armory.
  2. Choose a collected piece in the Collection and inspect its Upgrade information.
  3. Check the allowed star level, the marks price and what the next star adds.
  4. If the star is locked, complete the displayed Heroic requirement with that class first.
  5. Once the requirement and price are met, purchase the upgrade. Check that the intended piece is equipped: appearance choices alone do not add its bonuses.

Unlocking a star level does not buy it. Beating Heroic N in a zone raises the eligible star ceiling for that class's gear from that zone; the Armory upgrade still costs marks. A Heroic clear on a different class can open a difficulty level without opening the same stars for the class you are currently equipping. See the zone and Heroic unlock rules.

Which equipment should I upgrade first?

Start with pieces you actually use in your chosen build, then compare the next-star bonus with any nearby set threshold. A piece with a useful individual bonus and a piece that completes a useful set bonus solve different problems.

Equipment goalChecked requirement
Activate a four-piece set bonusWear four armor pieces from that set, each at one star or higher.
Activate an eight-piece set bonusWear all eight armor pieces from that set, each at three stars or higher.
Empower the eight-piece bonusRaise all eight armor pieces to five stars.

The set tooltip describes the empowered bonus as half again as strong. That does not mean every individual equipment stat increases by that amount. Read the specific set effect and its star progress in the Armory.

As a practical spending rule, price the whole threshold before upgrading one piece far ahead of the others. If three matching pieces already have one star, check the cost and effect of bringing a fourth matching piece to one star. If an eight-piece effect is your goal, one three-star piece alone does not activate it. Equally, a set effect that does not support your build is not automatically worth more than useful individual bonuses.

How do I get more marks?

Playing runs and defeating bosses earns marks. The client includes marks-earned messages, a one-run marks achievement and a boss-marks achievement. Both Normal and Heroic difficulty descriptions display a marks multiplier; Heroic increases rewards while making enemies harder.

Choose a repeatable run before chasing the largest multiplier:

  • For a needed star unlock: choose the relevant zone and Heroic level with the class that owns the equipment.
  • For spending currency: compare a difficulty you finish consistently with the harder alternative. Note the marks actually earned and the total time spent, including failed attempts.
  • When a higher difficulty stalls at a boss: compare a build with more sustained single-target damage or recovery. A strong pack-clear run does not guarantee a good boss result.

There is no verified universal best marks-farming class or map in this guide. The tier list helps choose a solo build; it is not a measured marks-per-hour leaderboard. The difficulty picker shows your actual multiplier, while repeated runs show whether the extra reward is worth the extra time for your setup.
